ChargeUp Europe Board Statement on European Commission’s CO2 proposal for cars
Today, the European Commission released its proposal for the review of the CO₂ standards for cars.
Choosing to weaken policy signals to investors is the wrong decision. Introducing flexibilities risks slowing a transition that is already well underway, without addressing the underlying competitiveness challenges facing Europe’s automotive sector.
“Despite these flexibilities, the trajectory is still irreversibly electric. The transition is firmly underway and supported by a growing market. The focus must now shift decisively to delivery. The charging industry is already fully engaged and ready to realise Europe’s electric future.”
~ Michiel Langezaal, President of ChargeUp Europe
The direction is clear:
EV sales in Europe are up more than 26% this year
97% of EV drivers say they would not return to ICE
Battery costs have fallen nearly 80% over the past decade
The EU now has more than 9 million private and over 1 million public charging points
The experience and the economics are moving in one direction. Europe should now focus on how to deliver this transition at speed — not how to dilute it. We will continue engaging to ensure policy choices support, rather than undermine, the end goal.
